As a result of a resolution passed at the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s (ATA’s) 2007 Annual Representative Assembly, active members of the ATA will have the opportunity to join one specialist council of their choice each year at no charge.

Regular Membership
Active members of the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and associate members who are ineligible for active membership as specified in ATA bylaws are eligible for regular membership in the Outreach Education Council (OEC). This includes superintendents, deputy superintendents and teachers in charter, federal and private schools who are associate members of the ATA. Regular members are entitled to all the benefits and services of council membership, including the right to vote and hold office.
Life Membership
Life members of the ATA are eligible for life membership in the OEC and are entitled to all the benefits and services of council membership except the right to hold office.
Student Membership
Student members of the ATA are eligible for student membership in the OEC. Student members are entitled to all the benefits and services of council membership except the right to hold office.
Subscription
Individuals or corporations who are ineligible for active or associate membership in the ATA such as teaching assistants, parents and libraries, as well as retired or nonactive teachers, may be connected with the OEC by paying a subscription fee. Payment of the subscription fee includes entitlement to the council’s publications and registration at the conference at the member rate as well as other services as determined by the OEC, but does not provide membership in the council. Membership in specialist councils is not available to those who, under the Teaching Profession Act and the Teacher Membership Status Election Regulation, are eligible to make an election of membership and have elected associate membership or nonmembership in the ATA. In addition, superintendents, deputy superintendents and teachers in charter, federal and private schools who are not associate members of the ATA are not eligible for membership in specialist councils.
